CaveCantieri was established in 1997 when Unicem spa, a leader in the Italian market of concrete and construction materials, asked our company to take charge of its quarrying operations in Northern Sardinia. At that time, Unicem was starting its process of decentralization, giving to local contractors the task to manage some branches of its business. So CaveCantieri started its activity dealing with a quarry located near Sassari where particularly pure limestone is extracted, crushed and selected. Today, CaveCantieri quarries its own deposit of pure limestone and has acquired an important share of the Sardinian market for industrial limestone. Our main clients are Unicem itself which absorbs 35% of the global production for its concrete production plants which are located in the province of Sassari. Then come two important manufactures of ready mixed mortars and other restoration products: the multinational Weber Saint Gobain and the local Calcidrata spa, taking 25%. We also supply limestone to the local Endesa Power Stations which use it in great quantities to lower the sulphur degree of gases from the combustion of coke, taking about 20% of the production. A range of smaller local companies which deal with concrete production , construction products and earth-moving absorb the remaining 20% of our production.. Because of the low cost of such raw material, our market is local however, apart for rare exceptions due to the high quality of the limestone extracted. We extract around 220.000 tons of limestone per year.
